Rewilding the School Pond

Primary School, [Leytonstone]

Project type

Pond restoration / biodiversity enhancement / outdoor science learning

The Starting Point

An existing pond stocked with carp had become a monoculture system.
Limited aquatic planting.
Minimal habitat variation.
Underused as a learning resource.

The brief was to:

  • Increase biodiversity

  • β€œRewild” the pond

  • Make it a meaningful teaching tool

Design Approach

Shift the pond from ornamental feature to functioning ecosystem.

Key Interventions

  • Removed dominance of carp to allow ecological balance

  • Introduced native marginal and aquatic plants

  • Created varied pond depths and habitat zones

  • Added submerged, marginal and emergent planting layers

  • Designed log and stone edges for amphibian and invertebrate habitat

  • Integrated viewing points for safe observation

Outcome

The pond now supports:

  • Greater species diversity

  • Improved water quality

  • Seasonal ecological change

  • Direct curriculum links (life cycles, food chains, habitats)

This project highlights ecological literacy and systems-based thinking.
