Rewilding the School Pond
Primary School, [Leytonstone]
Project type
Pond restoration / biodiversity enhancement / outdoor science learning
The Starting Point
An existing pond stocked with carp had become a monoculture system.
Limited aquatic planting.
Minimal habitat variation.
Underused as a learning resource.
The brief was to:
Increase biodiversity
βRewildβ the pond
Make it a meaningful teaching tool
Design Approach
Shift the pond from ornamental feature to functioning ecosystem.
Key Interventions
Removed dominance of carp to allow ecological balance
Introduced native marginal and aquatic plants
Created varied pond depths and habitat zones
Added submerged, marginal and emergent planting layers
Designed log and stone edges for amphibian and invertebrate habitat
Integrated viewing points for safe observation
Outcome
The pond now supports:
Greater species diversity
Improved water quality
Seasonal ecological change
Direct curriculum links (life cycles, food chains, habitats)
This project highlights ecological literacy and systems-based thinking.
